Long Lunch Break: Whole30

Long Lunch Break: Whole30

Hey there!

It’s been a whirlwind of a summer, and between the long commutes to my new office to jetting away every weekend,I haven’t had a minute to sit down and think about my blog. Or anything besides the daily grind, really.

My health has been on my mind. Not surprisingly, I’ve gained 10 lbs in the past 6 months, am exhausted from my commute, spend a ton of cash eating out while on the go, and my back and neck aches constantly from sitting in the car so many hours a day. I thought it was all part of the adjustment process until I stumbled across this post on the ClassPass blog.

I started researching Whole30 and so many of the testimonials resonated with me. I eat “healthy” and exercise “regularly” so I was struggling to figure out what was wrong – why couldn’t I control my weight, and why did I feel so crummy? I bought It Starts With Food and immediately dove in. If you’re not familiar with Whole30, the idea is to eliminate sugar, grains, legumes, dairy and alcohol from your diet for 30 days. The philosophy has a solid scientific foundation that eating junk – and too many carbs/sugar – throws your hormones out of whack, which wreaks a long slow havoc on your body. That’s why the last decade of boozing and occasional (ok, maybe more than occasional) junk food eating slowing crept up on me.

I’m now on Day 5 on Whole30 and I’m obsessed. My skin already looks clearer, I have tons of energy and I’ve been sleeping much better (and able to fall asleep earlier too!). Yes, there have been moments when I wanted to kill someone (or myself) and I did have some carb withdrawal headaches the first three days, but overall I’m really surprised at how easy it has been.

I just devoured the salad above for lunch – delicious!

Have any of you tried it? What are your thoughts?

Lunch Break: Lettuce Wraps 3 Ways

Lunch Break: Lettuce Wraps 3 Ways

I’ve really missed putting together this post every week. So happy to be back!

My new office has not had a refrigerator (they signed the lease a week before I started) so I’ve been eating out A LOT. There are healthy choices, but even not knowing how my chicken or roasted veggies are prepared has been detrimental to my waistline (not to mention to wallet). Our backordered fridge is getting delivered this week – WOO HOOOOO! – which means I can start planning my first few lunches!

With summer only a few weeks away and a few bikini vacations looming, I need to literally get my ass in gear this week. I signed up for a few challenges on GymPact (hiiiiighly recommend this app! Download it now!) to keep me committed to working out, and I’m going to try 17 Day Diet with my new roommates to get the ball rolling.

I’ve tried this diet a few times in the past and loved it! It seems a bit restrictive to get started but the first phase is just really clean eating, with a lot of variety. Whenever I explain it I feel it’s how we truly should be eating, and as much as I love my nightly glass of wine I also want to fit into my clothes again. It’s time for a lifestyle change, people!

Buffalo Chicken Lettuce Wraps by Ella Claire

Nothing like a little spice to get the week started, right? Plus, these can be easily tweaked to fit the diet (use less/no butter and low or fat-free bleu cheese dressing instead). This blog also has a lot of other great lettuce wrap ideas to choose from too!

Crock Pot Tex Mex Lettuce Wraps by Eat, Live, Run:

Excuse my while I clean up my drool. I’m obsessed with crock pot salsa chicken – so juicy and delicious – and this takes it to the next level with the extra spices. These will be great for dinner and as a leftovers!

Turkey Lettuce Wraps by Jillian Harris:

I love me a good, healthy, Asian inspired lettuce wrap. My boyfriend also loves ground turkey. This looks like a win win for us, and again we can make this for dinner and have leftovers the next day or two.

Can’t wait to be back on track!

Good Morning

Good Morning

Hello!

I stepped out for a minute but I’m baaaack.

This week marks my one month anniversary at my new job. I LOVE IT. I didn’t think it was possible to come to the office excited every morning, and actually be sad on Fridays that I won’t be at work for two days (what is wrong with me?!)

It has been as different as I imagined it would be to join a very small office (there are only 5 of us instead of 150) and while I do miss some of the perks, I love every minute of it. Being challenged is an amazing feeling.

The view isn’t exactly the same as my old desk, but this new one isn’t so bad (full disclosure: taken a couple blocks from my office).

Moving On

Moving On

Two weeks ago, I did something I’ve been thinking about for years, but never had the courage to follow through with.

I quit my job.

My last day was yesterday, which marked exactly 5 years, 4 months and 2 weeks there.

Moving on feels surreal. I can’t explain it. I thought I’d be more emotional, but I’ve been ready for this moment for so long, it’s too exciting to dwell on the past.

I will miss the comforts of my office, the routine, the people – but the chance to try something completely new thrills me. I thrive when I’m challenged, and I’ve been bored for too long. So bored that I thought starting a blog to spice up my desk space would somehow breathe new life into my daily grind.

That’s not to say I haven’t enjoyed everything I’ve worked on here so far, but I realized quickly that settling for boredom 9-5 wasn’t going to work for me, no matter how excited I am to dream up blog posts.

I start my new job Monday and I’m SO excited! I have no idea what my new work environment will look like, so I’m excited to pick up where I left off and tailor my DIY posts to complement my new space (I promise I have a few coming!).

Goodbye, old desk!

Lunch Break

Lunch Break

Hope you are all having a happy Monday!

I had a fantastic relaxing holiday weekend and hope everyone had the same. Regardless of which holiday you celebrated, there’s nothing like stuffing your face with holiday treats to remind you it’s almost bikini season!

I tend to post a lot of low carb ideas here because I like to avoid the post-lunch afternoon crash at work. Helps keep me energized for my evening workouts too. Do you notice a difference when you avoid carbs?

Here are some ideas to get you through the week – enjoy!

Tuesday: Greek Turkey Roll Ups by Organize Yourself Skinny

greek-roll-upsYes, I’m still using up the hummus and olive tepenade! I guess it’s a good thing I’m using it sparingly for flavor? Luckily I’m still craving it.

Wednesday: Lemon Avocado Tuna Salad by The Honour System

AvocadoTunaSalad-025

This looks so refreshing and delicious. I’ll reduce the amount of avo and add a little nonfat greek yogurt to make it slightly healthier.

Thursday: Roast Beef Bell Pepper Roll Ups by Nom Nom Paleo

roast-beef-roll-ups

I may switch out the roast beef for chicken or turkey since I already have them from last week’s trip. I can already taste that crunch bell pepper!

Friday: Shrimp Pineapple Pizza by Real Housemoms

Shrimp-and-Pineapple-Pizza-1024x759

A little treat for the end of week! I may turn this into a tostada with a whole wheat wrap because it will be easier to make at the office (not to mention healthier). Drooling over those shrimp!

Have a happy, healthy week!

Lunch Break

Lunch Break

Ughhhh.

That’s how I feel about today after indulging in an all-day unlimited champagne brunch yesterday. Oops!

Luckily I have some yummy, healthy recipes to get me back on track this week (compiled while munching on a store-bought kale salad at my desk. Clearly, this weekend did not go as planned!)

Tuesday: Hummus Chicken Salad from Real Housemoms

I have a ton of hummus and olive tepenade leftover from this delicious recipe, so I stumbled upon this blog while looking for ways to use it before it expires. Talk about yum!

Weds: Tuna Cheddar Lunchbox Bites from Simple Bites

These just scream childhood. The muffin idea seems like it would translate well into other recipes too – chicken spinach maybe?? I’ll have to experiment.

Thurs: Hummus Pita Pizzas from Home Cooking Memories

Back on the theme of using up leftover ingredients, I’m going to try this using a toasted whole grain tortilla and adding artichokes.

This is a short week with Good Friday/Passover – happy holidays everyone!

Inspiring Deskscapes, vol II

Inspiring Deskscapes, vol II

It’s impossible to stop looking for inspiration for my office. Like I asked myself a few weeks ago, I’m still trying to find the answer to what my “dream” deskscape looks like.

I’ve been pinning like crazy for the past few weeks – between packing and moving, I haven’t had enough time to finish a blog post, but I’ve had tons of moments to browse! I’m finally getting settled in my new house and have a chance to get down to business.

I’ve come to the conclusion that we are all pinning the same 7 gorgeous, immaculate, minimalist office photo shoots and that’s simply not fair. There are SO many amazing desks to be found! It’s also a little discouraging looking at these spotless spaces and knowing they’re just not functional – or even real! My inspiration below might not meet all of my daily requirements for my workspace, but I looked for elements in each that are creative, unique and smile-inducing.

My DIY-do list is running off the page right now so I need to stop looking and post this before I get too overwhelmed!

How cool is this desk?! You can actual buy it through the link (for a reasonable price) but I would love to DIY these colors in some way. The "Keep on Designing" print is also perfect for my industry! Source: DENY Designs
